Primo Orpilla to keynote 7th annual CET Designer User Conference

Conference is in Grand Rapids, Mich., for second year in a row

GRAND RAPIDS, MICH., USA—June 9, 2014—Configura, maker of CET Designer software, announced today that Primo Orpilla will keynote its 7th annual CET Designer User Conference.  Orpilla is a cofounder and principal of Studio O+A, a San Francisco-based interior design firm known for technology clients eBay, Facebook, PayPal and Yelp.

“Primo is a leader in changing workplace design – we’re so excited for him to keynote our user conference,” Configura Support and Training Manager Tracy Lanning said.

Orpilla will talk about how technology and demographics in the last decade have converged to change the way people work and live. He will address that change in his wide-ranging review of the workplace typologies, the varieties of space types and architectural motifs that contribute to a successful work environment.

In 2011, Contract magazine named Studio O+A Designers of the Year.

Orpilla is a leader in “democratic design,” with an emphasis on each client’s workplace culture.

“I think a good designer is a storyteller, ideally a ‘ghostwriter,’” Orpilla said. “In many ways, clients want to weave the fabric of their story into their space. A designer should have many voices and points of view.”

Configura made the announcement during the annual NeoCon World’s Trade Fair in Chicago. Orpilla, at NeoCon to present at the show, stopped by Configura’s space at NeoCon to meet with company leaders and showroom visitors.

CET Designer users at NeoCon can stop by Configura’s space, 8-3062, to enter to win a free trip to the user conference.

The 7th annual CET Designer User Conference will be held Oct 22-23 at DeVos Place in Grand Rapids, Mich. This is the second year in a row that the conference will be held in West Michigan, which is home to the world’s largest office furniture manufacturers, including Steelcase and Haworth.

Additional conference highlights include a state of the industry presentation and breakout sessions for designers, IT and dealer management. CET Designer “power-user” instructors will share their techniques and best practices in implementing and using the software.

User Conference details and registration information will be available at http://www.configura.com/userconference

Configura releases CET Designer 5.0

GRAND RAPIDS, MICH., USA – May 19, 2014 – Configura released CET Designer® 5.0 on May 19 with new and enhanced features.

“With a clean, modern look, CET Designer 5.0 is about personalizing and improving the way designers work and present,” Configura Support and Training Manager Tracy Lanning said.

http://my.configura.com/index.pl?page=marketplace&section=productinfo&pid=112

The 3D PDF Extension launching with CET Designer 5.0 lets users save and email 3D versions of PDF drawings created in CET Designer. Users – and their customers who receive the PDF – can spin and rotate drawings from varying angles to totally visualize their space. The feature is in addition to CET Designer’s existing presentation features, which include Photo Lab (photorealistic rendering) and Movie Studio (fly-thru video) capabilities.

“When the ability to quickly email and view a drawing is critical, the 3D PDF Extension is a huge time-saver,” Lanning said.

Work Modes is a new a feature in CET Designer 5.0 that lets the user select which task buttons should be visible. This feature is especially beneficial for salespeople using CET Designer who may not need all task buttons. Watch the video: Behind the scenes at Configura: CET Designer 5.0 Work Modes Tool - http://youtu.be/T1rrOoy8Lx0.

Additionally, users can skip a few clicks and speed up workflow by creating a custom, free-floating toolbox with one’s favorite tools and products. It’s also possible to pin favorite component tabs to the top for easy access. Watch the video: Behind the scenes at Configura: CET Designer 5.0 Toolbox and Pinning - http://youtu.be/y1KxlH5cB-s

The new Align Tool in CET Designer 5.0 makes non-smart objects smarter. Product symbols imported from Trimble Building’s SketchUp and Configura’s Catalogues can get the “snapping together” behavior that CET Designer is known for.

The new Align Tool helps designers to quickly and easily align and place objects in their drawings. Now even non-smart SketchUp objects can snap right into place,” Lanning said.

CET Designer 5.0 also features enhancements to the RevLink Extension, the CET Designer connection with Autodesk’s Revit that creates “component families” and synchronizes drawings between Revit and CET Designer. RevLink lets dealers and architects collaborate on projects with a single solution. The RevLink enhancement lets users exchange files between Revit and CET Designer offline: It’s much easier than before; users just save and import without the need for synchronization.

Configura also launches a 64-bit version for CET Designer 5.0 at the end of May. This version enhances performance of CET Designer on today’s high-end computers. 64 bit can handle very large drawings without slowing down because more system memory can be used. CET Designer still supports 32 bit.

“For those who work with very large drawings, 64 bit is a great option,” Lanning said.

Users who would like to try out the 64-bit version before it’s fully released can sign up here: http://on.fb.me/1eqcieq

Catalogue Creator (part of Configura’s Catalogues solution) officially launches later in June as part of the CET Designer 5.0 release. Catalogue Creator lets manufacturers create their own Catalogue, a fast and easy way into CET Designer. A Catalogue is a collection of a manufacturer’s products, stored in an online database managed by Configura and made available to thousands of CET Designer users around the world. (Learn more about Catalogues at http://bit.ly/SxHlfV.) Catalogues and Catalogue Creator, along with all of the features of CET Designer 5.0, will be demo’ed at NeoCon.

Configura opens new CET Designer Marketplace

Virtual site is a “design center” for manufacturers and designers

LINKÖPING, SWEDEN – March 10, 2014 – Configura today opened a new online Marketplace where manufacturers can publish and market their CET Designer Extensions and Catalogues to interior designers who use CET Designer, Configura’s space-planning software.

Like a bricks-and-mortar market that might have multiple vendors and myriad shoppers, Configura’s online Marketplace provides a virtual space where manufacturers of office furniture, kitchen and bath and other products – and the designers who specify these products – can meet as sellers and buyers.

“Marketplace is the hub for everyone and everything related to CET Designer,” Configura CEO Johan Lyreborn said. “And, it’s designed to grow. We’ve created a system and user interface that can handle a huge amount of products. This is a great opportunity for manufacturers and designers.”

For manufacturers

Marketplace is open to all manufacturers that have or want their products in CET Designer, offering incredible product exposure to potentially thousands of interior designers around the world. Manufacturers can control who has access to their CET Designer Extensions and Catalogues.

Extensions and Catalogues are among the solutions that Configura offers to the Contract Furniture, Kitchen and Bath, Industrial Machinery and Material Handling industries. Extensions and Catalogues work in conjunction with CET Designer. Catalogues, which Configura launched in November 2013, is a fast-track way for manufacturers to get their products into CET Designer.

For designers

With Marketplace, interior designers benefit from one easy-to-use online location to browse, buy and manage their licenses for CET Designer Extensions and Catalogues.

The Marketplace experience is customized. Each user has a personal CET Designer page; from this page, a user can easily install, uninstall and manage licenses.

“Marketplace is easy for users to navigate and find exactly what they’re looking for. Users can search for specific product lines, and can use filters and key words to refine searches. Plus, we’ve added a feature which highlights the manufacturers that a specific user might be interested in,” Configura Communications Manager Jon Lindholm said.

Configura wraps sold-out CET Designer User Conference in Grand Rapids

Company unveils major new product – Catalogues – and makes plans to hold 2014 event in Grand Rapids

GRAND RAPIDS, MICH., USA—Oct.11, 2013—Configura, maker of CET Designer software, held its sixth annual CET Designer User Conference this week, a major learning and networking event for users of CET Designer software. The sold-out conference in Grand Rapids drew almost twice the number of attendees than the previous year’s conference. More than 225 people – office furniture manufacturers, dealers and interior designers – attended the two-day event at DeVos Place Convention Center. Some came from as far away as Hawaii, Mexico and Canada.

“Grand Rapids is the right place to be,” Configura CEO Johan Lyreborn said. “We were thinking of ‘floating’ the conference to a different city next year, but everyone said they want it again in Grand Rapids, and we plan to do that.”

The previous five years, the conference had been held in Las Vegas. Sweden-based Configura opened its North American office in Grand Rapids in 2006 and held its first user conference in the United States in 2008.

“We were thrilled with the response to our conference,” Configura Training and Support Manager Tracy Lanning said. “This was our first year holding the conference in Grand Rapids, and the turnout was the best yet. Plus, major office furniture manufacturers such as Steelcase and Haworth are right here in West Michigan.”

Both manufacturers held special designer-dealer sessions at their respective headquarters in the days leading up to Configura’s conference.

“The conference was a home run from our point of view,” Steelcase’s Steve Eriksson said.

Catalogues unveiled

At the conference, Configura unveiled Catalogues, a brand-new solution that will enable manufacturers to get started with CET Designer faster than ever before.

Conference attendees got a first look at the new solution for entering a manufacturer’s products into CET Designer through industry standard code.

“The new solution will make the process faster than ever and will also make manufacturers’ products available to thousands of CET Designer users around the world,” Grand Rapids-based Vice President of Business Development Peter Brandinger said.

Catalogues officially releases on Nov. 18.

Nationally known “simplicity” expert presented

New York City-based simplicity expert Irene Etzkorn keynoted the conference.

“Simplicity is about shortening the distance between the company and the customer … and it’s about the company taking on the burden of complexity so the customer doesn’t have to,” Etzkorn said to a packed room that included not only user conference attendees but also West Michigan business community leaders who were invited to attend.

Etzkorn, along with SiegelVision colleague Alan Siegel, co-authored the book Simple: Conquering the Crisis of Complexity.

“Usually we work with companies to simplify something that has become complicated, so it is a pleasure to find a company that was founded on the ethos of simplicity and has continued to maintain it. As the keynote speaker at Configura’s CET Designer User Conference, it was delightful to be surrounded by people who have benefited from the principles of simplicity and to meet a CEO who believes that simplicity is the key to his company’s success,” Etzkorn wrote in a recent blog.

Spring Lake, Mich.-based izzy+ CEO Chuck Saylor gave a “State of the Furniture and Design Industry.” Saylor is also the current president of the Business Institutional Furniture Manufacturers Association. He has made his entire professional career in the furniture and design industry.

“A decade from now, the most important people on the planet in our industry are going to be people like you,” he said to the interior designers in the audience.

Longtime CET Designer users Jason Lund and Kari Anderson with Target Commercial Interiors also talked about the future and what it means for designers.

“Customers want to be part of the design experience – they want to be entertained and impressed,” Lund said.

Lund and Anderson began their presentation by having everyone don 3D glasses to view how a rendering, created in CET Designer, could “pop” into space.

Sheryl Miller, director of design for General Office Products in Minneapolis, said the conference was a “fantastic use of time for getting ideas to help streamline the design and sales process.” She added: “Keeping up to date with technology like CET Designer is critical.”

Conference attendees were eligible for Continuing Education Units accepted by IDCEC-participating organizations, including ASID, IIDA and IDC.
