Configura announces launch of CET Designer Extension for OFS Brands

GRAND RAPIDS, MICH., USA—Nov. 18, 2015—Configura, maker of CET Designer software, today announced that the CET Designer Extension for OFS Brands products has launched. OFS Brands based in Huntingburg, Indiana, manufactures furniture, cabinetry and seating for office, healthcare, education, government and home office markets around the world. “One of our biggest goals is to make sure we’re giving our dealers and designers the tools they need to be able to sell our products, and CET Designer is perfect for that,” OFS Brands eTools Developer Steven Dunn said.

OFS Brands became a Configura partner in June when work began on developing the Extension. CET Designer is Configura’s “core” Parametric Graphical Configuration (PGC)-based software platform; an Extension is an addition to the program with functionality that incorporates all of the rules, parts and pricing of a given manufacturer’s products. Manufacturers invest in proprietary CET Designer Extensions to make selling products easier, faster and more accurate.

“We partnered with Configura because CET Designer offers a simple approach to specifying option-rich products,” OFS Brands Technology Manager Wes Harper noted.

Configura had surveyed its CET Designer users around the globe, and many said they wanted OFS Brands included in CET Designer.

“We’re excited to offer OFS Brands products in CET Designer,” Configura Vice President Peter Brandinger said. “More products in CET Designer give dealers and customers more choices to meet their space-planning needs.”

Configura releases CET Designer 6.5

GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN, USA—Nov. 16, 2015—Configura, maker of CET Designer software, announces the release of CET Designer 6.5 with enhancements that include more image-rich options and rendering functionality, as well as the top “feature vote getter” requested by CET Designer users – the hatch fill option.

“Our users are our collaborators in continuing to make CET Designer the best solution for design, specification and space planning,” Configura Vice President of Global Customer Experience Tracy Lanning said. “We work to bring them the new features and improvements that make CET Designer a great tool.”

CET Designer 6.5 features the new hatch fill option. The much-asked-for hatch fill option works with 2D circles and rectangles as well as custom shapes. CET Designer users can use default patterns or import their own patterns from other programs, including from AutoCAD.

CET Designer 6.5 includes more image-rich options that bring enhanced realism to renderings. More office accessories have been added to the software, including furniture, bags and backpacks, file notes and vases. Additionally, users can apply their own images to different displays by dragging-and-dropping or double-clicking. Users can also apply logos – such as a logo of their dealership – to the office accessories, bringing further realism and branding to renderings produced in CET Designer.

With simplified 3D clipping now available in CET Designer 6.5, portions of drawings can immediately be sent to CET Designer’s Photo Lab for quick rendering. Another new render option is the Outline Overlay. With this new option, CET Designer renders two images: one normal render, and one contour render, which are then “overlayed” to create detailed outlines that can then be further adjusted in the post-processing stage.

Growing conference, major partners and more users underscore that Configura’s solution has become an industry standard

GRAND RAPIDS, MICH., USA—November 4, 2015—Configura, maker of CET Designer software, recently wrapped its 8th annual CET Designer User Conference, held Oct. 28-29 in Orlando.

A record number of attendees, nearly 300 people from the Americas and Europe – including contract furniture manufacturers, dealers, interior designers and IT professionals – participated in the two-day conference held at the Renaissance SeaWorld at Orlando.

All three founders of Configura – Sune Rydqvist, Johan Lyreborn (CEO) and Göran Rydqvist – were in attendance.

Established in 1990 in Sweden, the software solutions company is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. In addition to headquarters in Sweden, the company also has locations in the United States and Malaysia.

Configura’s space-planning software simplifies how manufacturers and their dealers and designers sell products.

“It’s wonderful to see how our solution has grown across the globe, and to talk with users in person at our conference about how CET Designer helps them to do their best work,” Sune Rydqvist said.

Configura’s solution has become an industry standard

In the late 1980s, Sune Rydqvist – owner of an office furniture company in Sweden – asked his son Göran Rydqvist and Johan Lyreborn to help him find a better way to specify and sell his products. The solution they developed became CET Designer – intelligent, highly visual software now used by thousands of people around the world. Such global companies as Martela, Kinnarps, Steelcase, Haworth, Teknion, KI, Inscape, Midmark, Tranquil, Maars, OFS Brands and others have invested in Configura solutions.

During the conference, two additional manufacturer partners – Herman Miller and Group Dekko – were announced.

“These new partnerships reinforce that CET Designer has become the leading solution for design and specification,” Lyreborn said.

The day before the CET Designer User Conference, Configura hosted a gathering of its manufacturer partners – a twice yearly event that brings competing companies to the table to talk about the CET Designer solution that each has invested in.

“We get together to talk about the technology and how to make it even better for the future. Having more companies on board as partners means we get more feedback, more input, into developing our solution,” Lyreborn said.

User conference sessions focused on designers, IT professionals

Day one of the CET Designer User Conference featured keynote speaker Debbie Millman, a Cooper Hewitt recipient honored for her work as host of the New York City-based radio podcast Design Matters. At the conference, Millman explored the different functions of the brain and how a human desire for self-expression and connectedness has led to an evolution in design and branding. (Watch the video of her keynote at http://bit.ly/1Q43Ti7.)

“It’s not about marketing or advertising. … It’s about belonging – to a tribe, a religion, a family, a work environment. … Any brand that fosters the ability to create mutual experiences in which we can share or relate allows our brains to resonate with others,” Millman said. “This is an opportunity for designers to design spaces so we can better connect with people. You have a profound impact on human behavior in that the spaces you design allow us to live a certain kind of life.”

During the first day of the conference, Configura Chief Product Officer Nicklas Dagersten highlighted some of the updates that will occur with the Nov. 16 release of CET Designer 6.5. He also talked about the planned 2016 launches of CET Designer for Sales, CET Designer Cloud and Virtual Reality for CET Designer.

CET Designer for Sales will be a version of CET Designer that’s “lite” so salespersons can use it to do quick presentations for customers. Meanwhile, CET Designer Cloud will let users run Configura’s software through a browser.

“What CET Designer Cloud means for designers and dealerships is huge,” said Brooke Snow, Configura business development manager. “It means they can use any Internet-connected device – a phone, tablet, laptop or desktop computer – to access and run our software, at anytime and from anywhere.”

Configura first unveiled the beta version of Virtual Reality for CET Designer at NeoCon in Chicago in June. At the CET Designer User Conference in Orlando, Configura had VR demo stations set up to let attendees experience the technology. Virtual Reality for CET Designer puts the designer or the customer “into” the space that he or she is creating or buying.

“VR has so much application. It’s experiential. It’s a powerful communication tool. You can give someone exactly the experience you have designed for them,” said conference presenter and attendee Jason Lund, IT manager for Atmosphere Commercial Interiors, a Steelcase dealership. “I’m very excited about how this will change how we design and communicate with our clients, and I’m impressed that Configura had the vision to produce it even before the hardware is commercially available.”

Idea-sharing, networking and learning

A big part of the conference is the idea sharing between Configura developers and the manufacturers who invest in and dealers who use the solution. Day one of the conference featured Configura Founder Göran Rydqvist, who heads up research and development at the company, talking about Parametric Graphical Configuration (PGC) – the technology and business philosophy on which CET Designer is based.

A “Chat with the Programmers” session invited manufacturers and users to talk directly with the people developing new functionalities in CET Designer.

The conference included a variety of breakout sessions, many taught by what Configura calls CET Designer “Power Users.” The first day included a number of such sessions, including a presentation by Design Manager Chad Bewley of Business Interiors of Idaho who spoke on using CET Designer to redefine the designer role and improve the sales process.

Attendee Lorna Marcuzzo, a senior mobile marketing designer for Price Modern, a Haworth dealership in Baltimore, said she liked getting to see how others are using the tool. “It’s interesting to see everyone in their job roles – I’m in marketing, not in design – we’ve also got salespeople, designers, marketers here at the conference. Everyone’s taken same program and is using it in different ways. I love seeing that and sharing feedback about it,” she said.

Amy Wright, a designer with Encompas, a Haworth dealer in Kansas City, who also presented at the conference, agreed. “This is one of the main events that we come to where we get to interface with a lot of dealers … we’re talking to people and figuring out what bits and pieces of their process that we can implement in our own business structure. I feel like that only makes everyone stronger,” she said.

During day two, American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) CEO Randy Fiser delivered a presentation that focused on how designers can inject wellness into the built environment.

“We’re spending 90 percent of our time indoors, much of it at work. So this work period in our lives is a critically important period. And as designers, we have an important role not just to prevent disease but also to improve health. … Our alertness, mood, cognitive functions, mobility – these [are impacted by] the physical environment we surround ourselves with,” Fiser said.

He shared a video produced by ASID that explored the transformative power of interior design in the built environment.

“The benefits of wellness-based design/construction decisions include reduced employee absenteeism and healthcare costs, and increased productivity and engagement,” Fiser said. “We must continue to develop a sensitivity of what’s meaningful, with systemic and sustainable improvements. Design really matters, and CET Designer is a great connection between our designers and the design community and technology. We know the visualization of space is such an important part of communicating design intent.”

Offering opportunities to network and socialize is a big part of the CET Designer User Conference. Configura hosted pre-conference welcome events and, during the conference, a Halloween Party that has become an annual event.

Additional sessions and the Best of CET Designer Awards ceremony rounded out day two. The Best of CET Designer Awards program honors the best work of CET Designer users in three categories: Rendering, Video and Best Success Story. Read about the winners and view some of the winning work at http://bit.ly/1RL1SFO.

Content and videos from the conference keynote and most sessions will be available online soon at www.configura.com.

Conference sponsors included Diamond Sponsor MMQB; Gold Sponsors Steelcase, OFS Brands, Haworth and ProjectMatrix; and Silver Sponsors officeinsight, ASID and SketchUp.

“We’re grateful to our sponsors, to our users, our team and to everyone who made the 8th annual conference our best yet,” Configura Global Customer Experience Vice President Tracy Lanning said. “We’re looking forward to planning an amazing ninth conference.”Configura leaders have announced that the 9th annual CET Designer User Conference will return to Grand Rapids, Michigan’s DeVos Place. The ninth annual conference will be held Oct. 18-19, 2016.

Configura announces Group Dekko as new partner

Configura will develop the first CET Designer Extension for desktop power solutions product line

GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN, USA—Oct. 28, 2015—Configura, maker of CET Designer software, today announced a collaboration agreement with Garrett, Indiana-based Group Dekko, a leading provider of workplace power solutions with a long history of providing electrical distribution systems and charging devices to the office furniture market.

Configura will develop a CET Designer Extension for Group Dekko’s diverse product lines.

“We’re impressed with the Configura team and its industry-wide solution that helps both the manufacturers who make the products and the designers and dealers who specify the products,” Group Dekko CEO John May said. “We are pleased to have our 2015 Best of NeoCon Gold Award-winning Ashley power taps be the first power solutions product line available in CET Designer, an extremely user-friendly and accurate solution for the entire sales and ordering process.”

CET Designer helps manufacturers and their dealers and designers to more quickly bring products to market by providing a single software solution for the entire space-planning process. CET Designer lets users create drawings in 2D and 3D, produce photorealistic renderings and fly-thru videos of the designed space, and generate accurate bills of materials and detailed installation documents.

CET Designer is Parametric Graphical Configuration (PGC)-based software residing on the Configura Extension Technology (CET) platform; an Extension is an addition to the program with functionality that incorporates all of the rules, parts and pricing of a given manufacturer’s products. Manufacturers invest in proprietary CET Designer Extensions to make selling products easier, faster and more accurate.

“Our Ashley power taps sales have really taken off since launch this past June,” May said. “A CET Designer Extension helps designers best showcase them as both aesthetic and state-of-the-art USB charging and power solutions in their workspace plans. Ashley is one of several new product lines that we plan to make available in CET Designer.”

Users of CET Designer simply “drag and drop” manufacturers’ product symbols into the highly visual 2D and 3D layouts while the software handles the technical product details behind the scenes, automatically calculating parts and prices. This functionality lets the user focus on design, and even collaborate with customers in real-time to plan spaces and order products.

“Group Dekko products are ideal for a CET Designer Extension, which will simplify specifying and selling of the products. We’re excited about this partnership and welcome the company to the Configura family of manufacturers,” Configura Business Development Manager Brooke Snow said.
The Group Dekko CET Designer Extension is planned to launch in early December.

GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN, USA—Oct. 27, 2015—Configura, maker of CET Designer software, today announced a collaboration agreement with Herman Miller, a globally recognized provider of furnishings and related technologies and services. Configura will develop a CET Designer Extension using Configura Extension Technology (CET) to build out Herman Miller’s global product portfolio, resulting in a more seamless and realistic digital experience for customers.

“Configura is the industry leader in visualization and space-planning tools, and has continued to progressively enhance their portfolio of software,” said Herman Miller Chief Information Officer Jeff Kurburski. “This technology is the foundation of our visualization strategy, which will make it easier to design, configure and specify our products.”

CET Designer helps manufacturers and their dealers and designers to more quickly bring products to the end customer; the technology simplifies the specification and ordering of products by providing a single software solution for the entire space-planning process.

CET Designer is Parametric Graphical Configuration (PGC)-based software residing on the CET platform; an Extension is an addition to the program with functionality that incorporates all of the rules, parts and pricing of a given manufacturer’s products. Manufacturers invest in proprietary CET Designer Extensions to make selling products easier, faster and more accurate.

“We’re so excited and pleased to welcome Herman Miller, and to partner with them for a CET Designer Extension,” Configura CEO Johan Lyreborn said. “Our collaboration agreement with Herman Miller is a major milestone for our company and for the industry. Configura Extension Technology is a one platform for all: a scalable solution embraced by industry leaders around the globe.”

Atmosphere Commercial Interior’s Jason Lund will present CET Designer & Virtual Reality – The Future is Here! Lund, the IT manager at Minneapolis-based Atmosphere, is a self-proclaimed technology geek. Conference attendees will be able to try the new Virtual Reality for CET Designer tool.

Lund will also present Hardware, Hardware, Hardware. The right hardware is essential to a good CET Designer experience. Lund will address such questions as: What kinds of computers and graphics cards optimize the user experience? How does virtual reality impact hardware choices? Lund will discuss why purchasing the right hardware is a solid investment that yields good returns.

Chad Bewley will speak on Redefining the Designer Role. Bewley has worked for Business Interiors of Idaho for 18 years where, in his role as design manager, he’s responsible for coordination among the sales and design departments. Amy Helm of Hannaher’s in North Dakota will present Efficiency Tips with CET Designer. As an interior designer, Helm has been using the software for several years and has developed a number of time-saving tips and tricks – including unique ideas for how to use the software to interactively present design concepts to customers.

Amy Wright will present CET Designer: Breaking all the Rules in the Dealership World. Wright is responsible for design, specification and project management of large-scale projects at Encompas in Kansas City, Missouri. With her technical and creative skills, she produces highly functional, aesthetically appealing spaces for her clients – and she also uses these skills to “break the rules” and design outside the box. In a management role, she oversees such accounts as Cerner Corporation and American Century Investments. She holds a master’s degree in interior architecture and product design from Kansas State University.

Configura Business Development Manager Brooke Snow will present CET Designer + Catalogues. Catalogues is a solution in CET Designer where manufacturers can quickly and easily add products into the program. Conference participants will learn how this tool works so they can, in turn, show the manufacturers they represent how they, too, can get their products into CET Designer.

Snow will also speak on CET Designer and Process Change. Change can be hard, but Configura has written a guidebook to make implementing CET Designer at dealerships a streamlined process. Snow will review the steps for a successful switch to CET Designer.

Dan Iwema will lead the Steelcase SmartTools Breakout Session. Iwema – part of the SmartTools team at Steelcase – will present tips that are specific to designing with Steelcase products and the Steelcase SmartTools Extension.

Steven Dunn of OFS will lead the OFS Breakout Session. OFS is a new partner with Configura and will soon launch its own CET Designer Extension. In this breakout session, Dunn – an e-tools developer at OFS – will help attendees to learn more about the OFS products and the Extension that will soon be available in CET Designer.

Rob Detrick of ProjectMatrix will lead the ProjectSymbols Breakout Session. Detrick will share best practices and participants will learn more about the new and upcoming features in the ProjectSymbols Extension to CET Designer.

CET Designer trainer Cate Sword will present Advanced Tips & Tricks in CET Designer. Users will learn “outside the box” tips from Sword, a CET Designer expert who has trained users in the solution for nearly a decade. With a fun and interactive teaching style, Sword will share clever tips that help users to design more productively with the software.

Sword also will present Computers 101. This session is designed for technology novices and anyone who wants to competently converse with IT departments and tech-savvy customers. Sword will talk about how networks and computers work, providing a basic foundation of tech knowledge for participants.

Configura’s Tim Deemter will lead Scrum 101. Configura uses a methodology called Scrum that provides an agile framework for completing complex projects. Although Scrum was originally created for software development, it works for managing all kinds of projects and processes. Deemter is Configura’s production team leader for all North American-based CET Designer partner projects. Participants will learn from Deemter how to implement Scrum strategies in their own organizations.

Nicklas Dagersten will present Configura and CET Designer Update: What’s New and Upcoming. Dagersten is chief product officer at Configura, with 17 years of experience that includes working with such companies as Kinnarps, DeLaval and Steelcase. Dagersten has worked in consultancy and R&D on both the Configura and CET Designer platforms. His main responsibility is to ensure that the right software features are released at the right time, and with high quality. At the user conference, Dagersten will talk about features coming in future CET Designer releases.

Configura’s Kendra Steinhaus will lead an Edit Graphics Session. Edit Graphics in CET Designer can be intimidating – it involves cut planes, work planes, meshes and more. But Edit Graphics is one of the most powerful tools in CET Designer; users can create “specials” and much more. Learn from Configura Training and Support Specialist / Interior Designer Kendra Steinhaus the many creative features that Edit Graphics offers.

Configura’s Andreas Ekbom will present Remarkable Renderings. Lindholm is a solutions manager at Configura with more than 18 years of experience, having worked on the CET Designer Extensions for Haworth, Spacesaver, KI and Midmark. Lindholm will discuss and present new features, and will welcome talking about feature requests and suggestions for improving the program.

A member of the Support and Training team at Configura, DeBruin leads an initiative to bring CET Designer to colleges and universities with CIDA-accredited interior design programs. Hear about Configura’s plans to get CET Designer into the curricula of design schools across the country – and how dealerships can get involved in educating future designers in their region.

DeBruin will also present CET Designer + Other Programs. Get inspired with new ideas on how to efficiently use programs with CET Designer – including AutoCAD, SketchUp, Excel, PowerPoint and MovieMaker – in order to maximize CET Designer output in processes and presentations.

Configura’s Peter Brandinger will present How Internal Processes and Roles Maximize the Benefits of CET Designer. Brandinger – vice president of business development in charge of North American operations at Configura – will discuss how dealerships can change internal processes and roles in order to maximize the benefits of CET Designer.

Configura Co-Founder Göran Rydqvist will talk about Parametric Graphical Configuration (PGC) – the Principles and Motivation Behind CET Designer. Rydqvist – vice president of research and development and a co-owner of Configura – is the creative mind and inventor of the technological philosophy Parametrical Graphical Configuration (PGC), the programming language CM, and the Configura and CET Designer platforms.
