Increasing our efficiency while providing best-of-class product solutions requires careful thought, planning and technical knowledge. VP Technology, Thomas Engström, is championing several projects to secure Configura’s position as the premier software provider for our target industries. Using design thinking methodologies, we are committing resources to enhance our product development platform for the future.

With a strong foundation in place for Configura’s continued growth, what role do you believe technology will play in both the short- and long-term?

From a short-term perspective, the reorganization of our technology team will ensure we are aligned architecturally within our total product offering. At the same time, we are setting the goal for our future platform as well as driving the next phase—which we refer to as the delta phase—that will enable the customers of today to utilize our new innovations as we iterate and grow. 

By incorporating design thinking methodologies in our processes, we are focusing on solving the right problems for our future solutions yet making them more modular and future proof. Investing in cross-platform initiatives and cloud operations will enable us to provide even more opportunities for users to design and sell spaces.  
From a technology perspective, how do you plan to increase efficiency within Configura’s product teams?

By focusing on architecture, we are providing the product teams with better guidelines that enable them to make fast and informed decisions. Mapping out the developer journey and focusing on the developer experience helps us proactively identify challenges—which we will continue to address with better tooling and training material. 
In what ways are you working to strengthen Configura’s development platform and how will those enhancements benefit our customers?

Our efforts in launching a dedicated developer experience organization, being led by long time Configuran, Dinesh Karthikesu, will improve the entire developer journey for our partners and developers. In 2023, we plan to open a new developer portal for our community, including a self-paced training platform for developers, catalogue specialists and Q&A training, all combined with improved training material. This will lead to a more consistent experience for all.  
What is one thing about Configura that surprised you in 2022?

I was pleasantly surprised that the number of technically skilled developers and Configura’s friendly culture really matched the image portrayed during my recruitment process. Configura is a great place to work.  
What is a day in the life of a VP Technology like?

I have a passion for programming, so that is always on the agenda! Fortunately, Configura has a lot of great programmers already, so my mission is more about setting the direction of our technology engagements. Each day I work with empowered and motivated functional leaders, which allows me to focus on coaching and supporting the team as we work together to reach our common goals.
